Solar domestic hot water systems harness the free energy from the sun and use it to heat up water for use in the home.
The solar collector should ideally be fitted on a south facing roof, but east/west systems are available, and there are kits for use on flat roofs. It is important that the roof is not overshadowed by trees, buildings and chimneys.

The solar collector
Flat plate collectors can be installed on an existing roof (on-roof collectors) or built into the roof structure during building or major refurbishment (in-roof collectors). Evacuated tube collectors offer premium performance in cloudy conditions and complete siting flexibility, capable of being mounted on any surface including facades and flat roofs.
The solar collector is filled with an anti-freeze solution that absorbs the solar heat. This heats the water in the storage cylinder. Alternatively, in some countries a drain back system is a preferred solution, where the liquid in the panels is emptied in cold weather conditions.
The solar hot water cylinder
The solar hot water cylinder is different to a normal hot water storage tank because it has a special solar heating coil in addition to the standard coil. The solar coil is much bigger than the standard coil to absorb as much heat as possible. At times when there is not enough solar energy to supply the homes hot water requirements, additional hot water can be provided by the gas boiler or electric immersion heater.

Solar controller
The solar controller includes all the components that are needed to transfer the heat from the solar collectors to the domestic hot water system in the most efficient way. It can also manage the supplementary heating when needed.
A solar domestic hot water system can provide up to 60 per cent of the home's annual hot water needs. This will mean substantial savings on fuel costs. In addition, it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the property by up to 400kg per year.
